Since the late 1990’s, Invisalign has been removing the perceived social stigma from many adults electing to wear orthodontic braces and fix their smiles later in life. Offering a clear, non-invasive alternative to classic metal braces and rubber bands, the Invisalign system is a series of BPA-free plastic aligners that are custom-fit for each patient. When each aligner is worn for 20-22 hours day, two weeks at a time, the average adult patient achieves their desired results within one year.
But what about the not-so-average adult patient? The one with a severe dental issue that has plagued them for years? Someone whose general health is being affected by a difficult oral problem? That person is also in luck. Though the treatment times will vary, adults with the following dental problems will see results with a customized Invisalign program:
Gapped or missing teeth: Gaps in the mouth occur if the jawbone experiences abnormal, continued growth; or, of course, if a tooth goes missing. Invisalign can close these gaps, bringing teeth together for a winning smile that not only looks great but protects the gums from additional risks.
- Overly-crowded mouths: Almost the opposite of a gapped bite, overly-crowded mouths occur when the jaw lacks room to house all of its teeth. Untreated, this leads to crooked teeth and extra plaque build-up, which can result in gum disease.
- Overbites and underbites: Overbites and underbites look just like they sound, and are defined by protrusion of either the upper teeth (overbite) or lower teeth (underbite). If left untreated by Invisalign, an overbite or underbite can cause gum irritation, extra wear on the teeth, and painful jaw and joint issues.
- Open bites and crossbites: An open bite is categorized as a bite where the top and bottom teeth make little to no contact. This can be caused by genetics or habits like thumb-sucking. Crossbites are a different kind of bite misalignment that causes the upper and lower rows of teeth to rest inside or outside of each other. Both can cause major issues like TMJ, speech impairment, wear of the teeth, bone loss, and gum disease, if left untreated.
Those adults seeking treatment for any of these issues are in luck if they choose to start an Invisalign program. And for those people who have an issue not listed above, it is always best to check with Dr. Derek Sanders and the staff at Orthodontics Only if Invisalign could also work for you.
