With more than three million improved smiles under its belt, the company behind the Invisalign product line is celebrating an anniversary soon: July marks eight years since Align Technologies, Inc. introduced Invisalign Teen.

We have offered this innovative, aesthetic treatment option for years, and I was named an Invisalign Elite Provider in 2016. This designation means I have treated more than 300 patients with Invisalign, and I continue to conduct at least 50 cases every six months.

For patients, this means they can feel confident that they are receiving treatment from an experienced professional who understands the intricacies involved in tooth movement, and knows how to utilize Invisalign and Invisalign Teen to achieve the desired movements that will create a smile each patient can be proud of.

What’s the difference between Invisalign and Invisalign Teen? This is a question we get asked frequently.

Invisalign has been around for nearly 20 years, and it aligns teeth using a system of custom-fabricated clear aligners that are unique to each patient’s orthodontic needs.

Invisalign Teen, which launched in July 2008, includes several key adaptations to the traditional Invisalign system, which are designed to address the needs of growing teenagers.

The most obvious difference is the blue “compliance indicators” on Invisalign Teen, which are a built-in tool for determining whether patients wear their aligners as prescribed. These indicators go away only when they are worn for the directed length of time. Parents in particular tend to appreciate this unique feature.

Invisalign Teen also offers as many as six free replacement sets of aligners, in the event the aligners get lost or broken.

Another differentiating feature of Invisalign Teen aligners is that they address the natural eruption of second molars and root control issues that are common among teen-aged patients.

Align Technology announced in March 2015 that three million patients had started treatment with Invisalign to date.

“This is a significant milestone in Invisalign treatment and reflects an accelerating rate of adoption worldwide by Invisalign-trained doctors and their patients,” the company stated in a press release last year.

There are Invisalign providers in 80 countries today. Invisalign and Invisalign Teen continue to grow in popularity because the systems’ features continue to provide us with increased clinical confidence to straighten teeth. The products combine biomechanics research, 3D software technology, cutting-edge customization, and insights from treating millions of patients worldwide to continue to provide a comfortable, aesthetically appealing treatment option for a wide range of orthodontic issues.
